Dean, School of the Arts, Emerson College

Emerson College invites applications and nominations for the Dean of the School of the Arts. The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School and is responsible for leading the intellectual and creative growth of its departments, programs, and faculty within a framework of shared academic governance. The Dean reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves on the Academic Administrators Council with three deans and the seven academic department chairs to help lead the academic direction of the College. Preference will be given to candidates who hold full professor rank. Appointment date is July 1, 2012.

Qualifications and Requirements
• Earned Ph.D, M.F.A., or other terminal degree.

• Possess a strong record of scholarly/creative achievement with demonstrated excellence in research/creative accomplishment, teaching, and service.

• Demonstrated record of administrative leadership with experience in academic and curricular planning and assessment, budget supervision, and faculty and staff personnel management including the tenure and promotion process.

• Ability to identify, prioritize, and articulate school needs to internal and external audiences and implement a future vision of school needs aligned with its strategic plan.

• Actively assist in fundraising, development initiatives, and alumni and donor fulfillment in coordination with the President and the College’s strategic plan.

• Demonstrated leadership on diversity-related initiatives and ability to work effectively with ethnically and culturally diverse faculty and students across disciplines in a collegial manner.


School and College Information
Emerson College, located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts, is the nation’s premiere institution in higher education devoted to communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Emerson is internationally recognized in its fields of specialization, which are visual and media arts; the performing arts; and writing, literature and publishing; communication studies; marketing communication; journalism; and communication sciences and disorders. The School of the Arts has 115 full-time faculty members in three academic departments including the departments of Visual and Media Art, Performing Arts, and Writing, Literature and Publishing.
