Assistant Professor, Theatre/Holder of Daum Professorship, University of Akron

The School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration at The University of Akron seeks applications for a full-time 9-month tenure track Assistant Professor of Theatre and holder of the Paul Daum Professorship, starting August 2011. Required qualifications: Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in Theatre, Theatre Education, or related field. Evidence of quality teaching in theatre education or process drama and the ability to teach two or more of the following areas: theatre history and literature; script analysis; acting; directing; voice and diction; movement; musical theatre. Qualified to teach on the graduate level and advise graduate thesis projects. Ability to bring energy, diversity, an understanding of interdisciplinary studies, and new perspectives to our growing undergraduate and graduate theatre programs.

Preferred qualifications: Experience or knowledge of teaching theatre at the elementary or secondary levels; professional experience in acting or directing; ability to use technology effectively in the classroom or online instruction.

Duties: In addition to teaching, the successful applicant will be expected to maintain a creative/scholarly agenda in keeping with a research institution, which may include directing mainstage theatre productions, and provide professional and university service.

Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Theatre, Frostburg State University

Frostburg State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a full time tenure track position beginning August 2011. Position includes USM benefits package.

Frostburg State University is located in the beautiful mountains of western Maryland within two hours of Washington DC, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. A comprehensive, regional university enrolling over 5,000 students in 41 undergraduate programs and 9 graduate programs, Frostburg State University serves as an educational and cultural center for western Maryland with strong programs in liberal arts and sciences, business, education and environmental studies. Frostburg State University Theatre offers a pre-professional training experience within a liberal arts curriculum. Our aim is to provide students with fundamental skills that foster an understanding of the art and business of the theatre profession through classes and experiential learning.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must hold an MFA in the area of Costume Design and/or Stage Management and an understanding of the performing arts in the context of a liberal arts education. Expertise in one of these areas is expected. Prior undergraduate teaching and/or professional experience, as well as a commitment to continued professional development.

Candidates in Costume Design or Stage Management will assist the Design/Technical Track Coordinator with recruitment and mentoring, and assessing and supervising Design/Technical students. The ability to safely and effectively supervise student crews is also required.

Responsibilities:

In the area of Costume design we seek a teacher/practitioner to teach introductory and specialized courses in theatre history, design, costume design and production. The successful candidate will design and supervise construction of costumes, make-up and hairstyles/wigs for up to four productions per year, mentor student designers of student and faculty-directed productions and oversee a costume shop which employs a full-time costume shop supervisor and student assistants.

In the area of Stage Management we seek a teacher/practitioner to teach introductory and specialized courses in theatre history, stage management, and design. The successful candidate will assist coordinating production assignments and meetings, document production budgets, mentor stage management students, attend technical rehearsals, and stage manage up to two productions per year.

Preferred Qualifications:

Other experience such as directing, playwriting, design of set, props or sound, or technical theatre experience a plus; opportunities to direct or design in other areas for season productions. We are especially interested in candidates who can teach broadly within the discipline, and who are prepared to work for the growth and success of Theatre and Dance.
