Managing Editor, Incite/Insight, AATE

The American Alliance for Theatre and Education, the national professional member organization for the field of theatre and education based in Bethesda, MD, seeks a freelance Managing Editor for its flagship magazine, Incite/Insight. AATE’s member driven online magazine, Incite/Insight, is published six issues per year and features organizational and national news, practical essays, book and performance reviews and feature articles that spotlight various areas of this dynamic field. This position requires a person who is task-oriented and has the ability, flexibility, and enthusiasm to interact with AATE’s board of directors, members and authors from around the country and thrive on daily challenges presented and willing to contribute to the magazine as a writer as needed. Responsibilities include:
• Copyedit submitted manuscripts for AATE’s digital magazine Incite/Insight to meet established quality standards.
• Encourage submissions from authors based on editorial schedule and features.
• Work with AATE’s Incite/Insight Editorial Board to edit and oversee the design and production of the magazine.
• Copyedit and proofread articles to ensure consistent accuracy and style in accordance with established conventions.
• Interact with authors to complete fact checking, review, edits to figures and changes to manuscripts.
• Research and write regular features and/or specific articles in the magazine.
• Work with designer to assist in production of the magazine.
Requirements include:
• A bachelor’s degree or greater in journalism, English or related fields
• Impeccable developmental/substantive/copy editing, proofreading, and style skills
• Strong writing skills
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style (14th Edition)
• Proven experience editing and/or publishing newsletters, journals or magazines
• Expert knowledge of MS Word, particularly using Track Changes/Comment functions
• Comfort working electronically with authors and designers
• Ability to deliver high-quality product under tight deadlines
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail
• Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively
• Interest in theatre education and/or children’s theatre
This is a part-time position; estimated 60 hours per issue. A per-issue stipend will be provided. Proximity to the Washington, DC area is preferred but not required. Applicants will be skill tested electronically and on hard copy.
