Tenure-track Position in Theatre Education at Emerson College

Description:

The Department of Performing Arts seeks to fill a full-time, tenure track faculty position to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in drama and theatre education, including courses in education required for Massachusetts licensure of teachers of theatre. The appointment begins with the 2010-11 academic year beginning September 1, 2010.

Additional responsibilities will include supervising student teaching practica, directing and administering the undergraduate theatre education program in the Department of Performing Arts, advising and mentoring undergraduate Theatre Education majors, serving on departmental and college committees and performing other services as appropriate to the position, sharing in the collegial development of curriculum in theatre education and in the department, sharing in the recruiting responsibilities for both the undergraduate and graduate Theatre Education programs, and advancing the academic and professional reputation of the institution.

The successful candidate should have a terminal degree in Theatre Education or a related area and significant professional experience in both education and theatre arts with at least five years of successful college level teaching experience. The successful candidate will have a background and teaching experience in the following areas: Drama/theatre arts curriculum design and implementation, pre K-12; contemporary theories of teaching/learning; authentic assessment; urban and multicultural education; current Massachusetts and national curriculum frameworks, theatre standards, and licensure requirements; student teacher supervision; mentoring college faculty in teaching; and contemporary national and international practices in process drama, drama-in-education, theatre-in-education, and playmaking.

The Department of Performing Arts, located in the downtown Boston theater district, has 550 undergraduate students in programs offering a B.A. degree in Theatre Studies and Theatre Education, B.F.A. degree in Acting, Musical Theatre, Dance/Theatre, Design/Technology and Production/Stage Management, and 72 graduate students in the M.A. in Theatre Education program. The Department offers productions mounted in three different venues, including the newly opened Paramount Production Center, the Cutler Majestic Theatre, and the Tufte Performance and Production Center.
